Helderberg Hospice is focusing on men’s health this month, which often take a back seat because men can be reluctant to seek medical attention. Statistics show they are less likely to visit the doctor which can lead to late-stage diagnoses for illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and prostate cancer.
Helderberg Hospice has been at the forefront of providing palliative care services in the Helderberg region. Palliative care is a specialised medical care focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness.
The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. This approach is particularly crucial for those with chronic or life-limiting conditions, ensuring they receive compassionate care tailored to their needs.
Ivan Dembo recently spoke of his experience at Helderberg Hospice. He said: “I am eternally grateful for the extraordinary care and compassion I received from Helderberg Hospice during my battle with Prostate Cancer metastasised into my bone and certain other organs.
“From the moment I entered their care, I was treated with dignity, respect, and warmth. The team’s dedication, expertise, and kindness have made a profound impact on my life.
“The hospice provided me with a dedicated sister who made regular house calls and arranged to provide my wife a respite from trying to deal with a dying patient, and also then provide me with the 24-hour, much-needed attention to my needs.
“Both my wife and I were provided with counselling services to help us cope with our emotional state. Their doctor managed my symptoms and provided palliative care, while their staff provided medication and emotional support.
“I am in awe of the exceptional care I received, which added immensely to my well-being. The staff’s selflessness, empathy, and professionalism are a testament to the highest standards of healthcare.
Your work is a beacon of hope and a shining example of compassion in action.
“Thank you, Helderberg Hospice, for your unwavering dedication and love. May your work continue to inspire hope and a quality of life, in those who need it most during a limited lifespan of fatal illness. With love and deepest appreciation.”
