The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has opened nominations for the Provincial Sport Legends Awards.
The department calls on the public to nominate individuals who are at least 55, and have made significant contributions to sport in our province and our country.
The awards, hosted since 2005, honour those who have promoted the development, transformation and growth of sports and recreation, but who may not have been honoured for their achievements at the time.
Many of these legends have gone on to do important work in their communities by promoting healthy and active lifestyles, advancing inclusivity, investing in younger generations, and by serving on the boards of sporting clubs and federations.
Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, said: “It is important that we acknowledge and celebrate our local sporting legends, heroes and icons. Often, they had to overcome many obstacles to be able to train, compete, coach, or develop programmes, and we want to use this opportunity to celebrate their lifetime of achievements. Please get your nominations in as soon as you can!”
Criteria for nominations, as well as nomination forms, can be found online at www.westerncape.gov.za/cas/sport-legends
Nominations close on Friday November 29.
