Emergency services are looking for a missing fisherman who was swept off the rocks by waves while angling from the shoreline in Gordon's Bay, said the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
The institute’s crew and emergency services of the City of Cape Town responded to the scene at around 10:30am on Saturday, July 5, after they were informed about the incident that involved a 43-year-old angler from Blue Downs, according to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
He was reportedly swept away by waves near the Rocky Bay and the mouth of the Steenbras River.
“An extensive air, sea and shoreline search, in rough sea conditions, has revealed no signs of the missing man,” Mr Lambinon said.
Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said Gordon's Bay police opened a missing person inquiry.
“It is alleged that the missing person was standing on the rocks when he got swept off the rocks into the water. He could not get out of the water and was swept away. Gordon's Bay SAPS was informed and attended to the scene together with the NSRI as well as the South African Police Diving Unit,” Manyana said.
Police further said the missing person was fishing with two other friends.
