A newborn’s life was saved this past week when a mother placed her baby in the Helderberg Baby Saver on Schapenberg Road, Somerset West.

The device, built into the wall of the Choices Crisis Pregnancy Centre, has now saved 15 lives since it was launched in 2014.

Amanda-Lea Jones and Sophia Warner, both responders for the Helderberg Baby Saver and members of Khethani Women’s Wellness, arrived minutes after the alarm was activated.

“Rescue paramedics Tobias Bosman and Renier Els quickly followed, confirming that the baby was in good health. The baby has been named Tobie, in honour of one of the paramedics, Tobias, who, as a father himself, offered exceptional comfort and support during the process,” said Ms Jones.

She said this is the first baby to be received through the Saver since Khethani Women’s Wellness took over management of the project in May from its founder, Sandy Immelman.

“Baby Tobie was cared for by the wonderful team at Helderberg Hospital until arrangements were made for his temporary safe placement through Wandisa Specialist Child Protection and Adoption Agency who will follow the social services protocol for possible reunification with the mother, should circumstances permit, or adoption,” Ms Jones said.

She extended gratitude to the mother for choosing to use the Helderberg Baby Saver as a safe alternative.

“We do not judge women facing crisis situations. Instead, we commend them for utilising the options and resources available to them in order to ensure their baby's safety,” she said.

The name Khethani means “You Choose,” and based on the information shared, various options will be made available for consideration.

The Khethani team consists of professionals ready to assist with confidential intervention and provide counselling support if needed.

Khethani is located at 63 Caledon Street. To support the services of the Helderberg Baby Saver and assist pregnant clients in need, donations of second-hand clothing, toiletries, and baby items are welcome for the charity shop.
