The Franschhoek Theatre will host microbiologist Professor Karin Jacobs for a talk on soil microbes on Wednesday, August 27, at 6.30pm.
The talk will explore the hidden world of life beneath our feet, and the role that soil microbes play in keeping ecosystems healthy.
Professor Jacobs hails from Stellenbosch University and holds a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Pretoria.
She has described several new species of fungus and serves on the editorial boards of several international scientific journals.
She is also the founder of a company specialising in soil microbial analysis for agriculture.
The talk will explore different microbial species, their lifestyles in soil, and their contribution to sustainable food production.
The lecture promises to shed light on how microbial diversity underpins soil health, influences ecosystems, and affects the sustainability of human activity.
The talk is part of the SmallTalX series, which brings scientists, thinkers, and specialists to the community for accessible talks on nature and science.
SmallTalX events encourage direct engagement between experts and the public through lively Question and Answer (Q&A) sessions.
Recent SmallTalX events have hosted experts on a wide range of topics, from caracals and sharks to radioastronomy and local insect life. Upcoming topics include tortoises, marine life, and environmental law.
Tickets cost R250 and include a glass of wine, snacks, and a Q&A with the speaker. Booking is essential, as seats are limited.
