The N1 Huguenot Tunnel reopened to traffic this morning, Thursday, October 9, at 6am, said the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL).

The reopening follows emergency repair work and safety assessments done after a bus fire inside the tunnel on Friday, October 3, prompting immediate closure.

No injuries were reported except for one official who suffered minor smoke inhalation. The official was treated on scene and taken to the hospital for further medical attention.

“The reopening of the N1 Huguenot Tunnel follows a rigorous process to ensure that all safety-critical systems are fully functional. The safety of road users remains our top priority, and the decision to reopen was taken only after comprehensive verification by our engineers and independent specialists,” said Randall Cable, SANRAL’s Western Cape provincial head.

While the tunnel is now operational, further permanent repair work will continue in the coming months, said Luphelo Ngalo, SANRAL’s spokesperson. This repair work will be done during the night, when traffic volumes are lowest to ensure minimal disruption to motorists.

“As an additional precaution, the speed limit within the tunnel in the affected area will be temporarily reduced to 40 km/h, and motorists are requested to drive with caution,” he said.

For real-time information about Huguenot Tunnel operations, motorists can contact  the Tunnel Control Centre at 021 877 5400.

The N1 Huguenot Tunnel was closed to traffic due to structural damage following a bus fire that occurred inside the tunnel on Friday, October 3, at around 11:30pm.
