On Wednesday July 2, human rights lawyer, Roger Chennells, will address the monthly U3AHelderberg meeting in a talk titled “Why indigenous knowledge and culture are important for us today, at the Strand Town Hall, at 10 am.

The audience can expect to learn much about the way of life, culture, belief systems and philosophy of our own indigenous people, the San, as well as those from other continents like Australia’s Aborigines, Jamaican Rastafaris, and others that Roger has worked with over his five-decade career. Roger’s interest lies in the unique qualities of these people as they seek social justice and cultural recognition.

Along with a childhood in rural KZN, and his legal education to PhD level, Roger has had some colourful encounters... his clients have ranged from Indian fishermen, to Rastafari elders, to urbangangsters, to San Bushmen and Aboriginal communities.

In his book “All Rise: Tales of Human Rights and Wrongs” he gives an account of his interesting and varied experiences.

In his presentation, Roger will focus on his experiences with and insights on the San Bushmen of Africa, as well as the Aborigines of Australia. He will also discuss the increased relevance of indigenous peoples in this modern age.

Copies of his book will be available at a reduced price of R200, cash only. Members enter free, and visitors pay R20 at the door. For more information, contact Denise Fourie at 072 211 1173.
