Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) will present three performances of Coppélia at the Artscape Opera House on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18.
The ballet will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Brandon Phillips.
The spirited classic production follows Franz, who falls for a mysterious girl on a balcony — unaware she is a mechanical doll, named Coppélia, created by eccentric toymaker Dr. Coppelius. His fiancée Swanilda, uncovers the truth about the mannequin and sets about winning back her distracted lover, setting off a chain of comic adventures.
Guest artist and former CTCB principal Daniel Rajna stars as Dr. Coppelius in all three performances, joined by a rotating cast of Cape Town City Ballet’s leading dancers: Hannah Ward shares the lead role as Swanhilda with Isabella Blair, while Franz is danced by Leusson Muniz, Jordan Roelfze, and Axton Green. Blair, Muniz, and Green will be debuting in their respective roles.
Reproduced by a team led by artistic manager Tracy Li alongside repetiteurs Nicolette Loxton and Lauren Rogers, and with Delibes' music featuring waltzes, mazurkas, and folk-inspired dances, Coppélia remains a beloved work in the classical ballet canon.
Performances are on Friday 17 October at 7pm (Ward/Muniz), and Saturday 18 October at 2pm (Blair/Roelfze) and 7pm (Ward/Green).
Tickets are available from R200 through Webtickets and Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695.
