Professor Deresh Ramjugernath was formally inaugurated as the 13th rector and vice-chancellor of Stellenbosch University on Wednesday, October 1.

Guests from the higher education sector, government, and civil society attended the inauguration, which was characterised by choral and solo performances by the university’s music groups and messages of support from dignitaries.

Professor Ramjugernath outlined his vision to guide the university into becoming Africa’s leading research-intensive institution.

These include holistic transformation, digital and administrative modernisation, internationalisation, learning and teaching excellence, staff and student wellbeing, and engaged scholarship.

“We will be relentless in our pursuit of academic and research excellence guided by the challenges of our time. Our thrust, however, will be through our impact and embeddedness in the challenges of our surrounding communities, in our region and our continent,” he said.

He reflected on recent breakthroughs made by the university's Biomedical Research Institute and the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, noting that the university’s scientists are tackling some of South Africa’s most urgent health challenges, including TB, HIV, and non-communicable diseases.

The chair of council, Dr Nicky Newton-King, welcomed guests with a reminder that 2025 had already been a momentous year for the university, following the installation of chancellor Lesetja Kganyago earlier in the year.

In their messages of congratulation, representatives of the university spoke with pride and hope for the future.

Sonja Roux, representing the vice-chancellor’s circle, praised Ramjugernath’s “calm wisdom” and academic leadership, urging support for his vision of a diverse and inclusive university while reminding the audience that integrity, empathy, and resilience remain the cornerstones of success.

Professor Ramjugernath assumed the office in April.

Dr Lesetja Kganyago, the chancellor of the university, said Professor Ramjugernath had already started to advance the university toward its aspiration of becoming Africa's leading institution in his short time as rector.

“He has done so with a deep respect for the community itself. He has insisted that our students are members of a living academic community and that their belonging is as important as their achievements.

“He has called upon us to pursue research not just to publish papers, but to find answers to some of today's most pressing questions. Be it in water security, sustainable agriculture, ethical artificial intelligence, or entrepreneurship. This is research that has the potential to change lives,” Dr Kganyago said.
