The recital will take place on Sunday, February 15, at Talani Terrace in Helderberg Village and is presented by the Helderberg Village Music Society. The performance forms part of Mr Romero’s ongoing connection with Cape Town audiences, where he has become a familiar figure on the local classical music scene.
He has previously performed in the region, including acclaimed cycles of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, the complete Schubert sonatas and themed programmes dedicated to individual composers.
Organisers said his Somerset West recital will feature a varied programme spanning Baroque, Romantic and early twentieth-century works.
The programme includes music by Scarlatti and Bach/Gounod, Romantic works by Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn, and well-known pieces such as Debussy’s Clair de Lune and Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 3. The recital will conclude with Chopin’s Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53.
According to his biography, Mr Romero has performed with leading orchestras worldwide and is a former prize winner of the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition. He has also won the Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Musical America Young Artist Award.
Born in San Diego to a family with roots in Guadalajara, Mexico, he is currently Professor Emeritus of Piano at the University of North Texas.
