The upcoming Spring not only heralds daisies and sunshine, but also the first birthday of Biodanza in Somerset West.
Biodanza, from the Greek word for Life and the Spanish word Danza, means The Dance of Life.
It encourages a passion for living more fully. It invites us to connect deeper with ourselves, with others and with life.
It was brought to the Helderberg valley by the dynamic duo, Kerry Sandison and Alan Hughes.
Kerry says: ‘’Biodanza brings together music, freedom of movement, fun and connection, in an environment of gentle encouragement and safety. You don’t have to be able to dance you just have to want more joy.’’
Alan adds: “It is significant that our first birthday falls in 2024, which is exactly a century after the birth of the originator of Biodanza, Rolando Toro. So we are celebrating two birthdays in one year.’’
The Tuesday evening classes in Bright Street have garnered a loyal following.
Zelda Rauch, a wealth advisor in the Boland, loves to dance. She says: ‘’Dancing regularly in a safe space is special. I become one with the dancers, young and old.’’
Local dramatist Soekie Woolls agrees. ‘’Biodanza is vivacious and vibrant. It is where I deeply connect through music and dance – without words – with people and the joy of life.’’
Karin Smith from Cape Town danced with the founder, Rolando Toro, about 30 years ago. “He was dressed all in white and exuded happiness. I started dancing then and never stopped. It attracts the kind of people you want to be with’’.
The Spring semester opens on Tuesday August 6, at the beautiful Imibala dance studio in Bright Street, from 5.30pm to 7pm, and the first class is free.
The birthday celebrations are scheduled for Saturday August 31. To confirm your place in the new semester, contact Kerry at 082 550 3098.
