Suitable for the whole family, Helderberg Academy of Theatre presents its third children’s production in the form of Peter Pan.
Based on the time-honoured novel, this story has been reinvented for the member of the HAT Drama classes aged 7 to 50.
When leader of the Lost Boys, Peter Pan, loses his shadow during a visit to London, headstrong Wendy helps him re-attach it. In return she is invited to Neverland – where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await.
Directed by Darryl Spijkers (Sister Act, 101 Dalmatians, Hairspray) with the assistance of HAT teachers Zain Cassiem and Zané Habig, this play gets a fun new look and is filled with twists and turns.
The story of pirates, mermaids and a crocodile is narrated by Playhouse favourite, Zané Habig (5678, Charlotte’s Web, Jumanji, Noises Off). She hold the production together and helps the whole audience return to childhood and enjoy the action.
Captain Hook is performed with foot-tapping aplomb by Leizl Rice and Tanya Wilbraham (The Little Mermaid 2010) takes on her simpleton sidekick Smee. Together the two are full of laughs with spirited performance.
Sheraine de Vries (23KG) surprises in her interpretation of sassy punk chick Tinkerbell.
Francois Retief (23KG, The Wizard of Oz) leads the piece as the often chaotic but always doing good Peter Pan himself.
Nina Strydom (Wegwêreld, Sister Act) takes on the role of Wendy as an assertive and challenging new friend to the hero of the story.
Although the play centers on the boy in green, it is as much her story as his.
Both of these performers attend Parel Vallei High School and have a long list of theatre and film accolades – true beacons of the performing arts at the tender ages of 17.
Michael and John are played by Caleb Haefele (Charlotte’s Web) and Aden King (The Sound of Music) – no strangers to our stage.
They follow a journey through lost boy’s caves, Neverland’s beach, shark infested water and ultimately find themselves onboard the Jolly Roger.
There are many more characters to meet and children who see the play can meet them all afterwards.
The play bursts with magic, mischief, music, make-believe and is interactive and colourful – sure to brighten up your day.
Show dates are March 7, 8, 9 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16, with evening shows at 7pm, and afternoon shows at 3pm.
