Bolander headed over to Delheim last week for a first-hand experience of the traditional cheese fondue, as part of the estate’s annual celebration of food and music.
The eclectic programme – featured over the past few Sundays, and on until the end of August, range from traditional Bavarian and German music, jazz to contemporary pop covers.
On this particular day (accompanied by yet another wild and wet storm), we settled down for their fondue after being greeted with traditional Gluhwein on arrival (instant warmth).
The lunch also included an appetiser of delicious mushroom soup, made from mushrooms gathered on the estate, and afterwards, we enjoyed a chocolate brownie and coffee.
On Sunday August 18, Hugo Veldsman will entertain guests with contemporary classics, and on Sunday August 25, the Hungarian Trio will be back – they performed on the day we were there, and it was the perfect backdrop, in the cosy and intimate venue, with the double base, violin and flute, and all the familiar tunes.
Their wines are available for purchase at cellar-door prices, and the event begins at noon, and continue through to about 3pm. It was lovely to greet owner Nora Sperling again – it had been a number of years (pre-Covid) since our paths had last crossed, when I visited the estate with my beloved mother.
