The Western Cape Artists Society (WCAS) is holding a presentation by Hayden Proud, on Irma Stern artwork, on Thursday August 8, at 6.30pm at the Rotary Club Hall, Lourensford Road, Somerset West.
Hayden’s work in preserving South African heritage has secured his legacy in the history of South African Art. He was born in Zimbabwe, studied Fine Arts at UCT, where he later taught Art History.
His did postgraduate studies at UNISA and Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
Hayden was appointed curator of historical collections at the South African National Gallery (SANG). With their amalgamation into Iziko Museums in 2001, his brief was extended to include curatorship of the Michaelis Collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings at Cape Town’s Old Town House.
In this presentation, Hayden assesses the Orientalist subtexts that are evident in some of Irma Stern’s Zanzibari works of 1939 and 1945, as well as in works by her contemporaries in the dominant colonial culture of the 1940s.
The lecture will also usefully reference the recent exhibition The Zanzibari Years: Irma Stern, shown at the Norval Foundation in Tokai.
Arrive at 6pm to start at 6.30pm, entry is R20 for members, and non-members pay R30 (including tea, coffee and snacks).
