Angus Morton is the new principal of Cannons Creek High School.
Cannons Creek High School has welcomed its new principal, Angus Morton, whose appointment took effect at the start of the new academic year.
Mr Morton, from Somerset West, takes over from Mike van Haght, who retired last December after being head of the high school for 24 years (“Cannons Creek bids farewell to principal,” Tatler, December 21).
Mr Morton has spent the largest part of his career in the independent school sector. He was a founding staff member of Somerset College in 1997. As a deputy head at Somerset College, he oversaw the academic and pastoral programmes.
He left Somerset College in 2006 and spent two years as a chemistry teacher at The Leys School in Cambridge, in the UK.
On his return to South Africa in 2009, Mr Morton joined Elkanah House High School in Sunningdale as the head of the physical sciences department. He was the principal at Elkanah House from 2020 until the beginning of last year.
Prior to him joining Cannons Creek towards the end of last term to go through the handover for the position, he worked as the head of physical sciences at Somerset West Private School.
Mr Morton matriculated from Westerford High School and completed his Bachelor of Sciences degree and postgraduate higher diploma in education at UCT.
”Cannons Creek is a small community school, a nurturing environment conducive to building healthy relationships and offering a broad, full programme. It is just the right fit," he said.
Mr Morton said he had had a chance to meet with each member of staff at the school. “I was immediately struck by the very high value that each of the staff members places on teaching at Cannons Creek.”
The school, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, had built a solid foundation “I feel privileged to lead the school in the next stage of its development. I am excited by the journey that has already begun.”
