Local sets new SA athletics record

Somerset West athlete Daniel von der Heyden, competed in the ASA Senior Athletics Championships hosted in Pietermaritzburg last month where he not only won gold in the under-18 men’s decathlon but in the process set a set a new South African record. The previous record was 6243 points and Daniel beat this with his total of 6935 points. Over the two days, Daniel set new personal best performances or equaled previous personal bests in 8 of the 10 events. Daniel has now qualified to compete in the European Championships in Slovakia from Thursday July 18 to Sunday July 21.

Bolander has followed Daniel’s athletic achievements when he competed in the National Athletics Championships since he was a pupil at Somerset College Junior School. A younger, Daniel was here featured in Bolander, proudly showing off his national gold medal he won in the under-10 category.
