Jesse Mitchell was murdered on his 19th birthday in Stellenbosch.

A Fish Hoek family is grappling with the loss of their grandson, who was murdered on his 19th birthday on Wednesday October 16.

Jesse Mitchell, a first-year computer science student at the University of Stellenbosch was found with a stab wound to his neck in Borcherd Road, Stellenbosch, according to provincial police.

In an email to the Echo, his grandfather Alan Mitchell said the incident happened around 1.30am as Jesse was returning to Nooitgedacht Residence after working until midnight with his project team.

Provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said a 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder and police are investigating the circumstances that led to the murder.

He said the suspect will appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court once charged with murder.

He said the victim was found by a security guard who was doing patrols and was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.

Jesse’s cousin, Bianca Jordaan, has started a crowdfunding campaign to honour his memory.

She describes Jesse as a beloved friend and family member.

“Jesse was talented, creative, and ambitious,” she wrote on the gofundme page.
