Ben is back, and this time he is learning about overcoming failure.

Ben and his little sister Lea are characters in Zuleika Smit’s series that centres on overcoming big challenges for little people with faith.

In this new book, Ben has an embarrassing failure on the rugby field. His mom prays with him, comforts him, and teaches him about perseverance.

Ben is cheered when his Springbok hero, Canan Moodie, visits the school and tells the pupils that he too has had to overcome mistakes and failure.

This book is as charming as the rest of the series, which is available in English and Afrikaans.

The Tippie readers are colourful and word-dense and my daughter, who is in Grade 3, got excited when I received them because she recognised them from her school library.

The books, which are available in English and Afrikaans, use colour to help children with phonics — making words “decodable” as the back cover says.

I was sent three books from the series, which seems to comprise dozens of books and curriculum support materials, such as flash cards.

The series also has books for toddlers, but Hello Tippie, Tippie Explores and Discover with Tippie are for grades 1, 2 and 3. Also available in English and Afrikaans.
