Police recovered abalone estimated to be worth R130 760 following a collision in Gordon’s Bay on Friday, July 11.
A white Mercedes Benz and a white Daihatsu hatchback were involved in a collision at the Faure Marine Road around 6:40am, according to police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana.
“The adult driver and a 14-year-old passenger jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene. Upon inspection of the Mercedes they travelled in, the members discovered five bags of abalone which were seized as evidence,” Manyana said.
Both the driver and the passenger were subsequently traced and arrested for possession of abalone. They were expected to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court once charged.
The driver of the white Daihatsu was taken to hospital for medical treatment due to injuries sustained.
It is illegal to trade abalone (Haliotis midae), in South Africa, without the permits and documentation from Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and in accordance with the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA).
