Streets were cleaner and spirits lifted on Saturday, July 19, as Shincheonji Volunteers, the volunteer arm of New Heaven New Earth, led a Mandela Day cleaning campaign in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, in partnership with Ward 5 Councillor Roy Van Rooyen.
The initiative brought together local leaders, non-profits, and residents with the aim of restoring shared spaces and inspiring a renewed sense of pride in the community.
Volunteers, dressed in bright yellow SCJ uniforms, collected litter and cleared neglected areas alongside community members and ward councillors.
“It was encouraging to see people from all backgrounds coming together in one spirit,” said a Shincheonji Volunteer.
“We believe that even simple acts, like cleaning the street, can carry a powerful message of dignity and care.”
The event received support and appreciation from local NGOs and passersby, some of whom expressed interest in participating in future activities.
“What stood out was the atmosphere of cooperation,” said Councillor Van Rooyen.
“This wasn’t just about picking up litter, it was about reconnecting as neighbours who care about our environment.”
The campaign also saw active involvement from councillor Nateshia Mcombring, who said it was rare to have volunteer support for ongoing cleaning efforts.
While Stellenbosch was the anchor site for this year’s Mandela Day efforts in the Western Cape, similar campaigns were carried out in cities across the country by Shincheonji volunteers, reflecting a unified spirit of service.
On Mandela Day, Friday, July 18, volunteers joined the Salesian Institute in Green Point, Cape Town, for a Sandwich and Soup Drive. The following day, on Saturday, volunteers returned to the Cape Town CBD for a clean-up initiative supported by local councillors and residents.
