A 54-year-old employee of Stellenbosch Municipality’s driving licence testing centre was arrested on charges of corruption and forgery on Thursday morning, July 24, according to the Hawks.

It was alleged that Elvis Frank Nontyi had access to the National Traffic Information System and was authorised to test applicants for learners and driver’s licenses, including the issuing thereof.

Investigation revealed that between March 17 and July 19 in 2022, he unlawfully and intentionally pocketed R5 550 from applicants, the Hawks said.

“The suspect issued learners' and/or drivers' licenses to applicants in exchange for money, which was paid in cash to him by the applicants,” said Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi.

This arrest came after the execution of a warrant of arrest, and the suspect appeared at the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Friday, July 25.

The matter was postponed to Thursday, August 14, for an attorney. He was released on R3000 bail.

The Stellenbosch Municipality welcomed the arrest and said they have cooperated with the investigation to ensure that the individual is brought to book.

"The Municipality stands firmly against corruption and remains committed to clean governance, accountability, and the protection of public trust," said its spokesperson, Stuart Grobbelaar.
