Gordon’s Bay library hosted its first-ever silent book club on Friday, September 12, introducing a fresh and engaging way for the community to enjoy reading together at a local beach.

Thirty-two reading enthusiasts from the library and community joined the club, according to René Walker, area head for Helderberg district libraries.

The event was planned to take place on the beach, but due to strong winds, the event was moved to a restaurant nearby, where readers still enjoyed beautiful sea views while turning the pages of their chosen books.

“Despite the name, the gathering was not entirely silent. Laughter, conversation, and the curious glances of passersby added to the atmosphere, proving that reading can be both a solitary and shared joy. It was wonderful to see how reading could spark both quiet reflection and lively connection,” said Ms Walker.

She added that it is envisioned that this will become a monthly get-together, and the event will also be rolled out to other libraries within the Helderberg region.
