Grade 7 pupils from Wallacedene Primary School will benefit from a programme that seeks to foster resilience and improve decision-making.

The Life Skills Training and Wilderness Camp programme, spanning eight to ten weeks, is scheduled to take place from September to December this year.

Non-profit organisations NoStop from Kraaifontein and Usiko Stellenbosch established the programme in 2021.

The training covers topics such as communication, self-awareness, stress management, goal-setting, and creative expression. Pupils also gain lessons from life skills workshops designed to help them make positive choices, according to Charlene Miles, the director of NoStop.

Twenty-five pupils started sessions of the programme at the primary school on Tuesday, September 23.

“Our aim is to give young people the skills and confidence to face challenges in school and in life. This programme keeps them engaged, builds resilience, and creates pathways away from risky behaviour,” said Ms Miles.

A key feature of the programme is a three-day wilderness camp, facilitated by Usiko. In nature, learners will engage in team-building, mentoring, and reflective activities that encourage personal growth and connection. The camp is scheduled to take place later this year.

Usiko director, Arnold Okkers, said this initiative is rooted in a shared commitment to reduce youth involvement in wrongdoings.

“The programme fosters a sense of awareness, encouraging young people to become more conscious of their choices, their environment, and the consequences of their actions.”

He added that the sessions also create a story-sharing space, where participants can openly share their life experiences with each other.

“Through this mutual exchange, they not only find solidarity but also gain valuable insights and life lessons from their peers,” he said.

The educator at the primary school, Nokuzola Gudlani, said the pupils were excited to meet the team and start the programme.
