The Strand triathlete and founder of Community in Action (CIA) charity, Carla Annas, is set to take part in the Patagonman Triathlon next month, a full-distance race in Chile regarded as one of the most extreme triathlons in the world.
She said she developed a passion for this endurance multisport race a few years ago, particularly Ironman 70.3 races, which involve a 1.9km swim, a 90.1km bike ride, and a 21.1km run.
“While the personal challenge is exciting, I want this journey to have a deeper purpose. I have decided to combine my two passions, endurance racing and education, to raise funds for children to receive a quality education.
“Since 2022, I have completed two races every year, including both official Ironman events and self-organised races. I now hope to use this momentum to support a cause I care deeply about,” Ms Annas said.
Patagonman includes a 3.8km swim that starts by jumping off a ferry into an icy fjord in Patagonia, southern Chile. A 180km cycle follows, with potentially strong winds and dramatic elevation. The race ends with a 42km trail run in the mountains, through breathtaking scenery.
Her goal is to raise R100 000 by the end of December. All funds will go directly to the Beehive Bursary Fund, which helps children attend The Honeybush Collective Primary School in Somerset West.
“I chose The Honeybush Collective because of their inspiring vision: to nurture a learning community where each child can realise their full potential through a balanced and holistic education. The school values creativity, critical thinking, and a deep connection to nature and humanity. It’s a place that cultivates compassionate, confident, and socially responsible individuals - future leaders who will positively impact the world,” she said.
The principal of the school, Fran Denton, said: “We are in awe of what Carla is doing, and are eternally grateful that she has chosen to support the Beehive Bursary at our school.”
The 2025 Patagonman Triathlon will take place on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
