The Police and members of a private security company arrested nine suspects who were caught with boxes of alcohol in Somerset West, estimated to be worth R3.8 million, on Saturday, November 8.
Provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said the suspects were aged between 22 and 47, and were set to appear at the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court once charged.
“The members followed up on information about vehicles that were en route from Montague Gardens to Somerset West, transporting boxes of alcohol.
“The vehicles were followed to the storage facility, where the suspects were arrested. The vehicles used in the commission of the offence were also confiscated. The estimated value of the alcohol is R3,8 million,” Sergeant Twigg said.
The suspects have been charged with possession of presumed stolen property
This follows the discovery of two separate alcohol manufacturing facilities in Stellenbosch and Klapmuts.
On Thursday, October 2, the police found an illegal alcohol manufacturing facility in Stellenbosch, three weeks after uncovering one in Klapmuts, on Monday, September 8.
The vehicles used in the commission of the offence were also confiscated.
