Professor Karin-Therese Howell, an associate professor of mathematics at Stellenbosch University and the academic director of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences South Africa (AIMS SA), has been appointed as the institute’s new executive director, effective Monday, December 1.
AIMS is a pan-African network of centres of excellence focused on postgraduate training in the mathematical sciences, as well as research and public engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Stellenbosch University is a founding member of AIMS, which was established in 2003.
Professor David Holgate, chairperson of the AIMS Council, said Professor Howell is a well-rounded academic known as both an excellent teacher and a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher.
