A Stellenbosch University food science graduate has received a life-changing opportunity to pursue her master’s degree in food and beverage innovation and management at Marche Polytechnic University in Italy.

Fallon Matthews is eager to take up the opportunity abroad but needs to cross a financial hurdle first.

The young graduate, who hails from Mitchell’s Plain, has only received a partial scholarship, which only covers her tuition.

She has since opened a BackaBuddy campaign to raise the much-needed funds.

“Although my tuition is covered through the scholarship, I am not able to take up my place because I do not yet have the required funds for the essential costs associated with relocating and securing a study visa,”  she said.

Funds raised through the BackaBuddy campaign will go directly towards her flights to Italy, accommodation, health insurance, and living expenses.

“This support is especially important right now, as my programme has already started and exams are approaching. Without these funds, I will not be able to secure my visa or take up the place I have worked so hard for,” she said.

Ms Matthews joined the programme remotely in September and has been attending classes online.

“I have been doing classes online, but need to stay in Italy to fully enrol and complete my exams. I’m hoping to leave by January 7, as this is when our exam period starts,” she said.

Ms Matthews said her goal as a food scientist is to help strengthen South Africa’s food system.

She also hopes to bridge the gap between innovation and quality in the food industry.

“This opportunity to pursue an MSc in Food & Beverage Innovation and Management at Marche Polytechnic University in Italy represents a pivotal step in my personal and professional journey.

“Coming from South Africa, our food system faces complex challenges related to food security, quality assurance, and sustainable innovation.

“Studying abroad allows me to gain advanced, globally-relevant knowledge that should be applied to the South African food system.

“Personally, it is an opportunity for growth, exposure, and transformation. And to learn from international experts, diverse food systems, and innovative approaches in food sciences.

Professionally, it equips me with the skills and perspective needed to contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s food sector.

A few months ago, food science graduate Fallon Matthews delivered a guest lecture on the United Nations sustainable development goals at Stellenbosch University's food science department. She is seen here with some of the students.

The study programme at Marche Polytechnic University aligns perfectly with her goals, Ms Matthews said.

“My goal is to return with the expertise to support safer, more innovative, and more sustainable food products, particularly in retail and manufacturing environments.

“And help local industries remain competitive while addressing national priorities such as food safety, sustainability, and economic development,” she said.

Asked what inspired her food science Journey, Ms Matthews said her passion for this field grew from always being interested in science growing up.

“During my degree, I saw how closely food is connected to people’s health, dignity, and livelihoods.

“Through my Food Science studies and practical experiences, I became aware that food is not just a product. It is a system that affects consumers, workers, businesses, and the environment.

Ms Matthews' father, Ronald, said he is immensely proud of his daughter and her commitment to her studies.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I’m proud that she wants to make her life a success.

“It has been a journey, and as a father, I see the barriers that she has broken and foundations that have been rectified. I can see the hand of God moving in her life.

“She has listened to our advice and has always made me feel part of her journey. I can only declare good success in her life.

“Fallon is also paving the way for her brother and sister as they really look up to her," he said.
