The University of the Third Age (U3A) Helderberg in Somerset West is launching a new initiative aimed at strengthening democracy by encouraging informed discussion and engagement on current affairs in South Africa.
The U3A Helderberg said the initiative, titled "South Africa Today," will provide an open and inclusive platform for knowledgeable speakers to share information, views and perspectives on a wide range of national issues and developments.
The focus will be on information-sharing and opinion exchange rather than debate, while also giving participants an opportunity to propose topical subjects for future discussion.
The first monthly discussion group meeting will take place on Friday, February 13, from 2pm to 3.30pm, at the Somerset West United Church, situated at the corner of Andries and Bright streets.
Western Cape MEC of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, will deliver the inaugural presentation under the theme “The challenges and frustrations of local governance.”
Parking will be available at the back of the church, with access from Bright Street. Attendees are requested to keep parking spaces closest to the entrance open for church members.
U3A members are asked to wear their membership cards and contribute R10, while non-members will pay R15.
