More than 3 000 people came together on Sunday, February 8, to take part in the Boland Pink Walk for Cancer in Strand, says the organiser.

The 21st anniversary walk, organised by the Boland Islamic Council Women’s League (BICWL), united cancer survivors, volunteers and healthcare partners in a collective show of support for those affected by cancer.

A highlight of the event was the handover of a R100 000 beneficiary donation to the Groote Schuur Hospital's Oncology Department. The donation will go towards cancer support services.

Chairperson and events coordinator of the women’s league, Sumaya Gabier, described the turnout as a strong reflection of the region’s commitment to the cause.

"The overwhelming turnout of more than 3 000 walkers stands as a testament to the strength and compassion of the Boland community. The organisers extend sincere appreciation to the many stakeholders whose support ensured an impactful event," she said.

The organisation also expressed gratitude to the many stakeholders who helped ensure the event ran smoothly.

These included the police, traffic authorities, private security companies, community police forums, neighbourhood watches, emergency services, as well as local businesses, schools and volunteers.

Professor Jeannette Parkes, head of the oncology department at the hospital, expressed gratitude to the women’s league and all participants.

"This generous donation will be directed to our radiation department, where it will directly support patients undergoing vital, life-saving treatment. Your compassion and commitment bring hope, dignity, and tangible support to those facing cancer every day (it is appreciated),” she said.

Now in its 21st year, the Boland Pink Walk for Cancer ensures that all funds raised directly benefit cancer-related causes.

Each year, a different beneficiary is selected, with support extending to oncology departments, cancer organisations, and individual patients and families, regardless of background.

The Groote Schuur Hospital’s Oncology Department was also the first beneficiary supported by the BICWL when the organisation was launched 27 years ago.

The Boland Islamic Council Women’s League is a women-led organisation focused on community upliftment and service. Its work spans health, social support and charitable initiatives across the region.
