A newly completed high school campus in Stellenbosch is set to accommodate up to 1000 pupils, as Apex Education Group expands its footprint in the Western Cape.
The non-profit education provider officially marked the completion of the campus on Thursday, February 12, in an event that was attended by representatives from the Western Cape Education Department, Stellenbosch Municipality, and other partners in government and civil society.
The high school campus will serve pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12, with the first matric class expected to graduate in 2028.
Chief executive officer of Apex Education Group, Jana du Plooy, said the Apex Stellenbosch first opened its doors in 2024 in a temporary facility while the construction was underway.
"We then moved across to the building in January 2025 when the first phase of construction was done. Now, the whole building is done. That was one of the things we could now celebrate," she said.
Ms du Plooy said the campus was designed to balance quality and affordability.
"We currently have 500 learners from Grade 8 - 10 on campus and will grow a grade every year. The full high school will accommodate 1000 learners, with 200 pupils in every grade."
“This building is more than bricks and mortar; it represents our belief that quality education must be accessible, and that sustainability and excellence can coexist,” she said.
The school is located on the Koelenhof Road, directly adjacent to Kayamandi. The site used to be a wine cellar.
David Maynier welcomed the development, noting the growing demand for education in the province.
“While our province is building schools faster than ever, the demand for quality education is so high that the government cannot meet it alone. The announcement of the planned expansion from a quality education provider like Apex is a game-changer for the Western Cape.
"The value in partnerships like these extends beyond helping to carry the load: they challenge government to be more innovative, more creative, and more focused on outcomes," Mr Maynier said.
In addition to completing the high school campus, Apex used the occasion to outline its broader growth plans. The organisation announced the launch of a primary school model, serving pupils from Grade R, and confirmed that it is preparing to break ground on a new campus in Pinelands.
Once completed, the Pinelands campus is expected to accommodate 1,720 learners, said Ms du Plooy.
Apex also formally introduced its 10-year expansion strategy, Vision 10/10/10, which aims to establish 10 schools and create 10 000 affordable school places by 2034.
Apex Education Group is a non-profit organisation that delivers affordable, quality education through what it describes as innovative and sustainable school models. It currently operates schools in the Western Cape and plans to expand further over the next decade.
