Gordon Forbes, a seasoned adventurer from Johannesburg, will share his journey to the Everest Base Camp at the upcoming University of the Third Age (U3A) Helderberg meeting on Wednesday, March 4 at 10am at the DR Church Helderberg, 82 Firmount Road, Somerset West.
Not related to the popular tennis player of the same name, Mr Forbes spent decades as a construction project manager, overseeing more than 200 projects.
After Covid-19 brought his career to a halt, he said he turned his focus from work to travel and adventure, pursuing a lifetime of exploration with his wife, Lynn.
In April 2024, he joined a predominantly Stellenbosch-based group to trek to the base of Mount Everest, a feat he completed. An Old Boy of Jeppe High School for Boys, he embraces the school’s motto, “Fortii Nihil Difficilius” (Nothing is too difficult for the brave).
Over 50 years of marriage, he and Lynn have visited and hiked through roughly fifty countries, exploring different cultures and putting South Africa’s rich diversity into perspective.
Mr Forbes’ athletic resume is extensive: numerous marathons, ten Comrades Marathons, ten Two Oceans Marathons, multiple triathlons including Ironman events, Midmar Mile and Dusi Canoe Marathons.
His hiking exploits include trails across Southern Africa, an almost 1 000-kilometre trek along the French Camino from France across the Pyrenees to Santiago, finishing at the Finisterre coast.
"This man’s boots are definitely made for walking, and his story is sure to inspire us all to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment," said Denise Fourie, the publicity co-ordinator of U3A Helderberg.
Members of U3A Helderberg attend the meeting free of charge, while visitors pay R20 at the door. For more information, contact Ms Fourie at 072 211 1173.
