A film inspired by true-life events surrounding the anti-apartheid uprising on the Cape Flats is set to make its debut at the Artscape Theatre on Thursday February 20.
Athlone ‘85 tells the story of a student’s rebellious actions, which have dire consequences for his family, friends, girlfriend and the community.
The film explores complex social and political issues such as racism, corruption, and abuse, says writer and director Theo E Davids.
“It evokes empathy, gives a voice to the silenced and shows how individuals can overcome hardship and bring about positive change. Set on the Cape Flats, the film portrays relatable struggles that resonate with a modern audience, making it entertaining and educational to a global audience.
“It tackles unspoken dark thoughts and shows how a few can destroy a community and how those problems can be overcome. In our world today, with all its conflict, wars, terror and division, Athlone ‘85 is an echo from the past telling us to be mindful and consider how we handle our differences. Freedom has cost many so dearly. It leaves us with the question – can we do things differently?”
The cast includes Celeste Williams, Zoey Daniels, Brandon Mack, Vincent Nel, Riedwaan Damon and Suaad Herman. Jay Marais is the director of photography and Jamiel Philander is the producer.
Ms Daniels described Athlone ‘85 as “the truth that many people are hungry for”.
“It does not pull any punches. It tells it like it is,” she says.
Ms Williams adds: “As someone who experienced the anti-apartheid struggle in the 1970s and 1980s first-hand, I am of the opinion that we have to stop our victim or slave mentality and tell our stories of identity and sacrifice for the greater good of all South Africans. With this film, we are saying that we know where we are going because we understand where we come from.”
Athlone ‘85 is produced by Gemini Twins Films, the company that produced the SABC 2 television drama series, Melody.
Funded by the National Film and Video Foundation, the 100-minute Athlone ’85 serves as pilot episode for a six-part TV drama series of the same name to go into production later this year.
The premiere screening will be at Artscape Theatre on Thursday February 20, at 7.50pm. Tickets, at R50 each, can be bought at Webtickets or any Pick n Pay. Non-perishable food and clothing for the needy can be donated at the screening.
