Somerset West ‘Golden Girl’ Edna Brand is currently competing in the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, from Saturday March 25 to Friday March 31 and has already bagged an impressive bronze medal on the global stage. Ms Brand who competes in the 70+ age category, scored a third podium place in the 3 000m indoor race walking item on Sunday March 26.
Competing and training amidst icy temperatures in Poland, Somerset West champion race walker has won a top 3 spot in a race item which she is a complete newbie too. This year is the first time, Edna Brand took part in the 3 000m track race and on an indoor track, elements which made it a bit more challenging for the local masters race walker. “Around the turns the track is elevated and steep, so it took me a while to get my rhythm on the track,” she said. But she persisted and finished in the top 3, making her an official bronze medallist in this year’s championships.
