Discussion on racism in film industry

Actress Melanie du Bois will be part of the panel discussing racism in the film industry.

As part of Heritage Month, the South African Guild of Actors (SAGA) will host a discussion titled SAGA SPEAKS: Unmasking Systemic Racism in Commercials, Theatre, Film & TV at Artscape on Friday September 27 at 4pm.

The discussion aims to unpack issues around systemic racism influencing casting decisions, production processes, and representation on-screen and on-stage.

Eoudia Samson will also be part of the panel discussion.

The event will host people from the acting and film-making communities to confront these issues, with the goal of promoting a more inclusive and equitable industry.

The discussions will also include insights from the University of Cape Town.

Actor and chairman of the South African Guild of Actors (SAGA) Jack Devnarain
Actress, director, arts activist and SAGA exco-member Thoko Ntshinga
Actresses Melanie du Bois, Euodia Samson and Kazi Khuboni
Film and TV director and chairperson of the independent directors association’, Andile Sinqoto
Screenwriter, director, actress and poet Weaam Williams

In a statement, SAGA said the event aims to spark meaningful change within commercials, theatre, film, and TV.

“In the spirit of Heritage Month, this event is not only a celebration of South Africa’s diverse cultures but also an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come—and how much further we need to go.”
