After introducing their plans to start a plant-box-project at their school, the Idas Valley Primary School, in Stellenbosch, has received a generous donation of corrugated steel planters to kickstart their project.
Taking delivery of the batch of the planter donations, at his home in Idas Valley on Monday October 7, the gardening project coordinator Maghmoed Kara, says this is the start of their project coming to realisation.
A total of six steel planters were donated by RainQueen SA in Somerset West.
“We feel very good about our first donation and the school is excited to get started,” says Mr Kara. The school has identified places where the planters will be positioned. The steel planters, says Mr Kara, will be more convenient and durable, so it’s ideal for the project at the school. “It’s lifelong investment,” he says.
He thanked the sponsors for the generous donation. “The school appreciates it a lot. The planters will be distributed to classes to take care of their own plants and decorate the exterior as they see fit,” says Mr Kara.
Zachary Snyder, deputy principal and overseer of the project, says: “From the school’s side we are very excited and are looking forward to obtaining the needed soil and seedlings for the project to take off. Our teachers at the school are all on board and everyone is working hard to launch the project at the start of November.”
Ruth Berning, manager at Rain Queen SA, said the company is interested in supporting any projects or NPOs focused on upliftment, sustainability and those working with children. “We love seeing and supporting organisations who work with the education of children and where they are taught how to grow their own food.”
The business makes it a priority to plough back into upliftment projects in the community. “I think as we’ve grown as a business over the almost 15 years, we are now finally in a position to give back to communities and support those who have supported us over the years; so it’s great to now have the capacity to give back to projects like the school’s garden project.”
Anyone who can assist the school with potting soil, seedlings or any other gardening equipment is welcome to contact either Mr Kara at 081 515 455 or Mr Snyder at 083 539 3260.
