The Milkwood Toy Library has moved to a new, bigger premises in Strand.
The library, which opened in May last year in Gordon’s Bay, operates on a similar borrowing method of a conventional library, but young patrons can choose from a wide selection of toys, books, educational games, puzzles, boardgames and soft toys.
Founder Lize Marais welcomed guests at the official relaunch on Wednesday October 30, at the new premises at the Wild Wild West Kids Playpark in Gants Centre, Strand.
Ms Marais said generous donations had prompted the move to a bigger premises to accommodate more toys.
“We are excited about the relaunch of Milkwood Toy Library at our new premises and we kick off this new chapter filled with inspiration, fun, and community, supporting the growth of play-based learning,” Ms Marais said.
“Children can sign up for a three-month membership which allows them to borrow toys for two to three weeks, before returning it to the library to swop with other toys,” says Ms Marais, a Gordon’s Bay resident and special needs teacher.
Ms Marais opened the toy library last year after being inspired on a trip to Australia and seeing the growing popularity of toy libraries and the benefits it holds.
Reusing old and often forgotten about toys and giving parents an affordable way to give their children a variety of play options, served as motivation for her to start something of this nature for children and teenagers living in the Helderberg basin.
