Thrill-seekers and mountain biking enthusiasts have something new and exciting to look forward to with the recent opening of the GOAT mountain biking trail at Devonbosch in Stellenbosch, with access to the neighbouring Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC) trail network.
THE GOAT mountain bike park and trails were developed by trail guru designer and builder, Duran van Eeden, along with full-time trail builder Wynand Basson. The project was coordinated by recognised and respected local rider Eldorette Carinus.
The 6km technical tracks cater to diverse skill levels and riders will get to do jumps, drop-offs, elevated trails, switchbacks, rock gardens, clay switchbacks, rollers, a treehouse, roller coaster and a unique pause feature.
According to Reghard Goussard, Marketing & Sales Executive at SquareTurn Developments, the vision for THE GOAT was to create an elevated maze and trail that will offer a unique riding and visitor experience.
“Gear up for an adrenaline-pumping ride amidst magnificent scenery on one of the most unique MTB courses ever created. Whether you’re a beginner looking for adventure or a seasoned rider seeking the ultimate thrill, THE GOAT promises an unforgettable outdoor encounter,” says Mr Goussard.
Annual membership to THE GOAT is R500 per member and R300 for a second family member, students and junior under 18. Day permits are R50 per adult and R20 for kids or R100 and R60 respectively including access to the Bottelary Hills MTB trails.
Mr Goussard, also the founder of SA Trails Network (SATN) – NPC, believes that mountain biking – as one of the top sporting disciplines within the SA sporting landscape – is a catalyst for change in the area.
“We are excited about partnering with the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy to allow visitors the opportunity to explore the extensive mountain bike trail network through conservation areas and working wine farms,” he says.
Situated on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the BHRC was founded in 1992 and currently has 50 landowner members that work together to promote conservation through sustainable farming practices, alien invasive clearing and Renosterveld regeneration.
According to Christel Liebenberg, manager of the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy, the collaboration with THE GOAT as well as the Polkadraai Bike Park provides a unique mountain biking offering. “Whether you’re an adventure seeker and adrenalin junky or a seasoned rider that enjoy spending time in nature, you will find a riding adventure that caters to your specific skills and fitness level. Polkadraai Bike Park is also the ideal kiddies party destination.”
Holders of Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC) annual permits have free access to THE GOAT as well as to the Polkadraai Bike Park. Annual permits are available online at www.bottelaryconservancy.co.za with the midyear special on sale from 1 June.
There are a wide variety of other eco-tourism offerings in the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy.
