Norman McFarlane’s recent article on the Lourens River (“Lourens River helps with drought crisis”, Bolander September 13) was, as normal, a delight to read.
However, if you follow the Lourens River down by Victoria Road and De Ruyter, it changes with all the rubbish, plastic bottles and food containers.
These are stuck on the high ground, as the water has receded. If not, it would – as you say – end up in the sea.
The river from the bridge in Main Road in Somerset West turns into an open sewer, you can smell the pungent smell. The use of the river has become a conduit for discarding rubbish.
As has the continued dumping of rubbish by the pylon by De Ryuter on the veld. Have we become a nation of its someone else’s problem?
