On stage at The Drama Factory in Strand later this month, My Story with the Blues relays blues guitarist aficionado Rob Thompson’s personal journey in discovering this enigmatic movement in music.
Covering Latin influences like Carlos Santana, the Story delves deeper with artist such as B.B. King and Little Walter, to more contemporary artists like Dan Patlansky and original compositions. A live trio brings this repeatedly sold-out performance to The Drama Factory on Wednesday March 27.
Rob Thompson, supported by Kerry Hiles on bass and Kristo Zondagh on drums, brings to life Thompson’s personal journey with the music that feeds his soul.
This live trio format allows space for each musician to be expressive in their interpretation of both the classics and original songs written and arranged by the band.
Kerry Hiles is a South African singer and bass player, actress, emcee and voice artist. She has years of experience in cover bands, original bands and show bands, covering various styles of music.
Rob Thompson, can easily be described as the most talented and passionate Blues Rock export to emerge from Port Elizabeth in the last decade and a half. A bonafide triple threat as guitarist, singer and songwriter, Thompson’s heart lies in performing.
In addition to his international success, he has performed at a number of South African music festivals and other venues with his bands.
He has shared the stage with a variety of artists and groups such as Albert Frost, Guy Buttery, Robin Auld, Dave Goldblum, The Jack Rabbit Slims, Stuart Reece Band, Black and White Dogs, Gitanos De La Duende, and the Four Winds Folk Club, the oldest of its kind in South Africa.
Often dubbed “The Chameleon,” drummer and percussionist Kristo Zondagh has the ability to span genres. His early career was punctuated by orchestra pit playing in musicals, concerts with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and metal gigs, often on the same weekend.
Besides his various session gigs, Zondagh currently divides his time between groups like Franky & The Misfits (swing), Straight, No Chaser (jazz), Johnny Foxx & The Jack Rabbit Slims (rockabilly), Rob Thompson Band (blues/rock), Tim Sedso & The Linebackers (rock) The Reunion (rock), GEESx (techno/DNB), and Boiling Point (hardcore).
The show on Wednesday March 27, is at 7.30pm and tickets cost R180 and R200.
