On Monday September 23, Sea Safe NPO held their Sea and Beach Safety Programme, for a second year, for boys from Sir Lowry’s Pass Village Primary School.
They had an amazing session, and couldn’t have asked for better weather, shared Martin Bester.
“The program started with the assessment. The boys then put on their ‘Think Caps’ ready to listen and learn about Sea and Beach theory, we then moved to the beach and water for the practical games to practically apply what we had learned during our Sea and Beach theory session.
“We achieve this through games, such as Help-Help Torpedo Bouy Rescue team game, Role-playing as the Lifesaver, Flags etc.”
Martin continued: “I have been a Lifesaving Nipper coach at Strand Lifesaving Club for over 10 years, and I have watched childre, overcome their fears, and at the same time respect the sea.”
The programmes are designed for school-aged children, ranging from Grade R through to Grade 12, and 2.5-hour programme consists of four sections: Pre-assessment quiz; Sea and Beach Theory; Beach practical games and application of theory; and Post-Assessment quiz.
The Sea and Beach Safety Programme covers topics such as: Beach Safety; Lifeguards; Waves; Tides; Sea and Beach Hazards; Rip Currents; Self Rescue; Helping Others (Emergency Number – 112); Basic first aid; and CPR.
Martin extended his thanks to Strand Lifesaving Club, for allowing them to use the club facilities and lifesaving equipment. He also expressed appreciation to Virtual Resources – Workday HR IT Company, for the funding of the transportation of the mini-taxi.
