The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed the appointment of former Nyda Ceo Waseem Carrim as its new acting CEO with immediate effect.
Carrim's appointment to the top job follows the end of term of administrator Freeman Nomvalo who was appointed by Blade Nzimande last year.
The newly installed board expressed full confidence in Carrim's ability to provide stability and leadership that will propel the entity forward.
Carrim boasts an impressive track record, having led the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) as CEO to achieve nine consecutive clean audits. During his tenure, he successfully grew the organisation's budget from R400 million to R1.5 billion.
"The board is confident that Mr. Carrim will provide the stability and leadership needed to initiate the transition of NSFAS towards becoming an international best practice benchmark in student funding.
"His deep understanding of State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) operations, combined with a commitment to fostering innovation and growth, and a passion for youth development that is evident in everything he does, makes him the appropriate choice for this role. A role that requires the ability to turn around a fund, which he has demonstrated at the NYDA"
The Minister of Higher Education Nobuhle Nkabane, also appointed a new board last month to help fix financial and governance crises that have plagued the entity for several years. The board has vowed to bring to book those who have been involved in corruption activities and maladministration.
Recently, the Special Investigating Unit also covered R2 billion mistakenly paid to universities and identified 40,000 students who were receiving NSFAS funding improperly.
