Over 1 400 (a large majority being children) drown each year in South Africa, and many of those occur right here in our local water spaces in the Cape.
The Darcey Sunshine Organisation does incredible work driving water safety education and teaching underprivileged children to safely and competently enjoy water.
This non-profit developed from a local tragedy when a three-year-old drowned in the family pool in Somerset West, and as education has been proven to prevent drownings, they are passionately driving water safety education across Cape Town.
Each year, to commemorate all souls lost to drowning, they do a “Big Splash of Sunshine” in the week of World Drowning Prevention.
This year, once again, there’s a 12-hour swimathon at the heated indoor pool at Generations School in Somerset West, on Sunday July 21.
On Thursday July 25, there is an event at Strand Beach, in front of the Strand Lifesavers building. Enjoy a fun cold dip, followed by a complimentary hot drink.
Take friends or family along, and add your ripple to this important cause, and enjoy being part of some winter sunshine with a purpose. There will be medals and a sense of pride for all participants.
