Just as nature boasts with a new colourful floral make-over, you too can spruce up your home for spring and the revival and revitalising of your space need not break the bank.
Getting started usually requires selecting and settling on a seasonal colour to revive your indoor space. A good way to bring a new look to a space is a change of colour schemes.
The good news when it comes to colour trends on the interior decor front is that this season you can let your imagination run free and your individual style and taste preferences reign, says interior design guru, Liam Mooney from Liam Mooney Studio in Paarl.
“It could be argued that this is the age of the individual. There has never been a better time to go with your personal taste and gut,” says Liam.
Whether your taste is more soft, plain, earthly tones or brighter bolder hues, warm or darker tones, the choice really is yours. “Gone are the days of being rational or reasonable. Now really is the time to truly express yourself,” he says.
Once the choice of colour has been decided on, his advice is to declutter your space by reducing the number of items on display to create a more minimalistic look.
“Spring is the season for editing. Now’s the time for a clearer, fresher and lighter look. As the days get longer and it’s a little warmer outside you don’t want to feel bogged down by too much stuff.”
For those in search of affordable ways to spice up a space, he advises swapping out décor items like scatter cushions, throws, vases and mementos.
More budget-friendly tips provided by Liam include rearranging your furniture, to think of innovative ways to place them. “You would be surprised how a simple rearrangement of furniture does wonders for the psyche.
Another innovative tip is to change the arrangement or display of wall art. “You might choose to group two artworks together that can tell a little bit of a story?”
More options to spruce up your space for spring include selecting well-chosen accessories with the recommendation being to resist the temptation to stock up on décor items from mega online shops or outlets, but instead consider and carefully select special items with meaning and originality, like for example antiques from a vintage store, or cute, characterful thrift items.
Other tips include bringing much natural light into your space, and for artificial light the key here is to incorporate warm lightning. Liam’s advice is for light bulbs to be 3000K to create a really inviting look.
If the idea of redecorating or sprucing up a space leaves you overwhelmed, no need to panic, Liam says a slow start will help you ease into the creative process.
He says: “If you’re unsure about styling a room, you can start off slowly just by colour blocking. Perhaps all your blue accessories are on one server and so on. I do this all the time to great effect.”
Lastly the key to keep in mind, says Liam, is to keep on changing and working on a space. Though you are revamping your space for a new season, the décor should not remain stuck or feel stagnant. “Never stop experimenting with layouts and arrangements. Your house will come to life as it slowly ebbs and flows. It’s meant to be lived in, not look like a museum,” he says.
